FT resident Patricia Biggs ‘third-generaton R.N.'
For Franklin Township resident Patricia Biggs, becoming a nurse was truly a matter of extending a family tradition. When she received her bachelor of science diploma during graduation ceremonies at the University of Indianapolis on Thursday, May 1, she became a third-generation registered nurse.
Patricia's grandmother, Noreen Feller, received associate's and bachelor's degrees and worked at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis until her retirement.
And Patricia's mother, Susan Gent Biggs, earned her associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees at UIndy, and now is a Clarian nurse-educator at Methodist Hospital, where the university has an on-site degree program.
Now, Patricia Biggs is starting her career in the intensive care unit at Riley, where she began working while still a student.
In tribute of the family's remarkable career accomplishments, the School of Nursing presented the trio with special plaques, with each topped with a lamp, the symbol of the nursing profession. The presentation took place in UIndy's Ransburg Auditorium.

Comprehensive Land Use maps on sale
The Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development has announced that maps denoting the county's Comprehensive Land Use Plan, including the Franklin Township Land Use Component, are now available for purchase.
There are four maps total - one for each quadrant of the county. The price of each map is $2, which covers the cost to produce and print it. Maps are available at DMD's Division of Planning located in Room 1821 in the City-County Building.
Three parts of the Comprehensive Land Use plan are on each map - land use, environmentally sensitive areas and the critical area text. This information is valuable for anyone interested in the development or redevelopment of property in Marion County - property owners, developers, neighborhood organizations, land appraisers and real estate experts.
Adopted by the Metropolitan Development Commission in parts from 2002 to 2006, Indianapolis Insight: the Comprehensive Land Use Plan for Marion County, Indiana is the official land use plan of record for the county. Indianapolis Insight replaces the comprehensive plan that was developed in the early 1990s.
By state law, the land use recommendations of the plan are one of the five items that the Metropolitan Development Commission must consider in their decisions on the petitions brought before them. In addition, the plan is required by a number of state and federal grant programs such as Community Development Block Grants and federal highway funding.
The plan was developed by the Comprehensive Planning section of the DMD Division of Planning over a period of seven years, with nearly 150 public meetings and hearings to collect input from thousands of Marion County residents and businesspeople. The Franklin Township portion of the county's Comprehensive Land Use Plan was adopted in mid-March of 2006.
For more information about purchasing the land use maps, call (317) 327-5155.

FT woman arrested after high-speed chase
A Franklin Township resident was arrested on Sunday, April 26, following a high-speed chase on the southeast side of Indianapolis. The pursuit resulted in the woman reportedly hitting an on-foot Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer, colliding with two vehicles and ultimately being bitten by a police dog.
The chase, involving Ingen Fishman, 38, began in a Franklin Township subdivision - located off of Five Points Road between Shelbyville and Stop 11 roads - and ended with her arrest at 900 East Washington Street.
The series of events began at 3:23 Sunday afternoon when IMPD officers attempted to serve Fishman with a re-arrest warrant at the woman's listed address in the 7600 block of Heatherdown Court. The warrant contained charges of dealing cocaine and possession of cocaine, both Class B felonies.
According to a police report, when police officers George Hughes and Glen Schmidt approached the front door of the residence they heard the overhead garage door being opened. As a passenger car began backing out, the uniformed officers requested that the driver stop. Instead, the driver said "no," added an expletive and continued to back into the street.
The report stated that when officers attempted to open doors to the car, Officer Schmidt (on the passenger side) was struck in the left leg and injured by the vehicle. The driver, later positively identified as Ingen Fishman, then drove in the direction of Officer Hughes who was able to jump out of the way.
Reportedly, a neighbor to the Fishman residence witnessed the officers' attempt to stop the woman from leaving.
After exiting the subdivision, Fishman headed northbound on Five Points Road to Southeastern Avenue where she made a left turn. Another officer spotted the car at Southeastern and East Hanna Avenue, indicating the driver was going at a high rate of speed. He activated the emergency equipment on his departmental police vehicle and began pursuit.
The police report said that during the chase Fishman's car struck a civilian vehicle at Southeastern and Hunter Road, and later collided with the fully marked vehicle of another police officer. The pursuit continued through school zones, neighborhood church areas and signal lights until Fishman reached the intersection of Southeastern and East Washington Street, where she turned east.
Due to damage on her car, Fishman came to a halt on Washington Street, where once again officers ordered her out of her vehicle. After the woman refused, one officer broke a window out of the disabled car in an attempt to bring her into custody. His efforts resulted in injuries to both hands.
Fishman also was warned that if she continued resisting, a canine officer would release his police dog. Following continued punching and kicking by the woman, the dog was released and Fishman wound up sustaining a bite from the canine unit. The woman was later transported by paramedics to Wishard Hospital for treatment of the dog bite.
In addition to the charges in the felony warrant the officers were trying to serve, Fishman also was left facing additional preliminary charges that included:
Various media reports indicate police officers believe Fishman may have been on drugs during the chase.
