Neighborhood christian
legal clinic opens site at local church
The Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic (NCLC) recently
announced the opening of the clinic’s twelfth
legal intake site on December 6, 2007 at Southeastern
Church of Christ, 6500 Southeastern Avenue in Indianapolis.
“We are excited that Southeastern Church of Christ
has agreed to open its doors to expand the pro-bono
legal services offered by NCLC staff and volunteers”
NCLC Executive Director Abigail Lawlis Kuzma said. “This
new site will provide an easily accessible location
for those in eastern and southeastern Marion County
as well as surrounding counties. None of our other intake
sites are convenient to this region.”
NCLC, has offices in the Citizen-King Park neighborhood
on Indianapolis’ Near North side as well as the
Englewood neighborhood on the city’s near eastside,
as well as intake sites throughout the greater Indianapolis
area. NCLC is a 501(c)(3) organization that provides
pro-bono legal services to low income clients through
the use of volunteer and staff attorneys. The first
step in receiving legal services from the clinic is
for a client to attend an intake session, where they
have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a lawyer.
The Southeastern site will be staffed completely by
volunteers from the church and from several of Indianapolis’
major law firms including: Clark, Quinn, Moses, Scott
& Grahn, LLP; Baker & Daniels, LLP; Hoover Hull
LLP; Sommer Barnard, PC; Fillenwarth, Dennerline, Groth
& Towe; and Bose McKinney & Evans, LLP.
“We believe hosting an intake site for NCLC will
provide a valuable service to our low-income neighbors
in need,” said Dale Robinson, executive minister
at Southeastern said. “Through our food pantry,
divorce care and other on-going community outreach programs,
we are in touch with hundreds of families each year
who have otherwise unmet needs. We look at a partnership
with NCLC as a logical step in our church’s attempt
to be a caring and compassionate member of our community.”
The Southeastern intake site will run the first and
third Thursday of each month and will run from 6:30
to 8:00 p.m. Clients are served on a first-come, first-served
basis. The legal clinic serves low-income residents
whose income is at or below 125% of the federal poverty
rate.
