Circle of Valor honor to FC's Gurbani Virk

Franklin Central student Gurbani Virk is among 28 specially-challenged high school seniors recognized by the Indianapolis Downown Kiwanis Club on Friday, February 8, during its 33rd annual Abe Lincoln Scholarship awards luncheon at The Murat Centre.

Virk was among 24 area high school seniors presented with Circle of Valor awards in recognition of attaining achievements in the face of daunting obstacles.

Amy Marsh, director of the FCHS Guidance Department, said Virk moved from India to Franklin Township as a freshman and "has achieved at a high level. Now as a senior, she is taking accelerated classes."

Following graduation from Franklin Central this spring, Virk plans to attend IUPUI to study pre-dentistry.

Four area students received prestigious Kiwanis Abe Lincoln Scholarship stipends:

  • Sawyer Willis, Southport High School
  • Macydon "Mike" Sprowl, George Washington Community School, $10,000
  • Alyssa Kistler, Manual High School, $7,500
  • Kamilla Benko, Bishop Chatard High School, $5,000

Scholarship presenters included Kiwanians Stephen J. Willem, controller, Lauth Property Group, and past president of the Kiwanis Foundation of Indianapolis; John F. Frank, vice president of Schneider Corporation, and member of the Kiwanis Foundation board; Joyce Johnson, executive director, Starfish Initiative; and Melissa Boggs, vice president of human resources and consulting, Quantum Human Resources LLC.

Scholarship Awards committee, served as emcee of the awards program.
