FC dispatches Southport in conference clash

The Franklin Central girls' tennis team turned a short jaunt into Perry Township into a successful Conference Indiana excursion on Tuesday, April 22, with the Flashes dominating the Cardinals 4-1.

Coach Bruce Torgersen's squad swept all three singles matches and divided doubles play in winning its second straight conference outing.

Two matches were extended to three sets. FC senior Angela DeCamp at No. 1 singles rebounded from an opening set loss at 6-4 to register 6-0 and 6-2 decisions. The Flashes' top doubles tandem of seniors Kelsey Pieratt and Jackie Schmaltz won the first set 6-4, before falling 6-2, 7-5.

Other Franklin Central winners included:

  • Senior Katie Oldknow at No. 2 singles by scores of 6-0, 6-2.
  • Senior Heather Summitt at No. 3 singles, 6-0 and 6-1.
  • Senior Brittney Muston and sophomore Rachelle Smith at No. 2 doubles, 6-4 and 6-1.

The FC varsity record improved to 2-3 overall and to 2-1 in conference play. Next action for the Flashes will be against conference rival Bloomington North on Thursday, April 24, in a 5 p.m. home start.

In jayvee competition, Franklin Central bested Southport 6-2. FC winners included all doubles combines - Meagan Grant-Lauren Thurston, Amanda Church-Jennifer Gunderman, Stephanie Spears-Kelsey Underwood, Ashley Elkins-Corie Spears, Carly Cecil-Michelle Hopper and Whitney Rice-Amanda Huddleston.
