FC nudges Wildcats in unexpected fashion
The Franklin Central girls' tennis team's confrontation against Lawrence North took on an unexpected twist on Friday, April 25. And it was a sudden development not related to the windy conditions that saw numerous serves and volleys play tricks at both ends of play on the Flashes' courts. The home team managed to register a 3-2 victory, but the initial point credited to Franklin Central came very prematurely at No. 3 singles. After FC senior Heather Summitt had posted an opening-set win in tie-breaker fashion at 7-6 (7-5), her opponent, freshman Clair Kassebaum, had to leave for another engagement. That provided the Flashes with a default victory and an early team point. Franklin Central and Lawrence North divided the remaining four points. The Flashes captured both points in doubles matches and the Wildcats claimed both remaining singles points. ** No. 1 doubles – FC seniors Kelsey Pieratt and Jackie Schmaltz defeated senior Alex Navarre and sophomore Kameron Geiger 6-4, 6-3. ** No. 2 doubles – FC senior Brittney Muston and sophomore Rachelle Smith bested junior Allie Kipper and freshman Nicole Gentry 6-4, 6-2. ** No. 1 singles – After FC senior Angela DeCamp scrapped to a 6-4 opening-set win, her opponent, Debra Easton-Bates rebounded to capture two straight sets 6-1, 6-2. ** No. 2 singles – FC senior Katie Oldknow was beaten in straight sets by senior Alexa Craig 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. The victory upped Franklin Central's season mark to 3-4, with the Flashes having won three of their last four encounters. In jayvee matches, Lawrence North registered 11 wins in 15 matches. Franklin Central winners included Meagan Grant, Stephanie Spears and Michelle Hopper in singles play and Lauren Thurston and Rachel Corffeh in doubles action. - FTONEWS.com - |
