Franklin Central athletes claimed a pair of first-place finishes in the annual Conference Indiana Track & Field Championships staged on Friday evening, April 25, at Bloomington.
Competing at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex on the Indiana University campus, the Flashes' 4 x 800-meter relay combine wasted no time in harvesting what would prove to be the FC boys' only event championship of the eight-school meet.
Franklin Central's baton unit – consisting of senior Michael Dunten, juniors Joe Talhelm and Scott Lasiter and senior D.J. Sloan – posted an 8:08.92 clocking to easily outdistance runner-up Bloomington North by more than six seconds in the 3,200-meter challenge. The Cougars' combine was timed in 8:15.18.
FC senior Christine Talhelm and Columbus North senior Betsy Kim – entering the 800-meter test with the top two seeding times – lived up to their advance billings. Talhelm claimed the top spot on the award podium by registering a 2:18.03 clocking to stride ahead of Kim at the finish line by 1.43 seconds. The veteran Bull Dogs' distance ace was timed in 2:19.46.
In the race for the Conference Indiana team titles, Franklin Central landed in the No. 5 position in both divisions.
- Unranked Columbus North pulled off a huge surprise in the girls' division by besting six statewide-ranked schools in one poll in winning the Bull Dogs' first-ever championship at the Robert C. Haugh facility. Columbus North totaled 120.5 points, followed by No. 18 Bloomington South at 107.75 points, No. 32 Perry Meridian with 101.5 and No. 13 Bloomington North at 92.75.
Defending champion Franklin Central, also unranked, closed with 63 markers, and was trailed by No. 11 Pike at 59, No. 26 Lawrence Central at 41.75 and unranked Southport with 36.75.
- Favored Pike defended its Conference Indiana boys' division crown by accumulating 147 points. The No. 4-ranked Red Devils were followed by No. 10 Bloomington South at 124 points, No. 20 Lawrence Central at 89 and No. 24 Columbus North with 66.
The No. 21 Flashes totaled 53.5 points, placing ahead of No. 15 Bloomington North with 50 points and two unranked schools – Perry Meridian at 48.5 and Southport at 45.
Three FC boys' runners – Dunten, Lasiter and junior Michael Johnson – each garnered points for the Flashes in a trio of events.
- In addition to providing the lead leg of the winning relay quartet, Dunten placed third in the 400-meter dash and contributed a segment to the Flashes' fifth-place 4 x 400-meter baton effort.
- * Lasiter placed second in the 1,600-meter run with a clocking of 4:28.97, just a few strides behind race winner Joe Holahan of Bloomington South (4:26:19) and well ahead of the third-place finisher, Southport sophomore Lance Nelson. Lasiter also placed seventh in the 800-meter run, in addition to helping the Flashes to their relay victory.
- Johnson placed seventh in the 100-meter sprint and handled legs on the fifth-place 4 x 400-meter and the sixth-place 4 x 100-meter relay chases.
Several members of the FC girls' contingent turned in stellar performances:
- In addition to winning the 800-meter run, Talhelm initiated the Flashes' 4 x 400-meter baton unit's runner-up finish behind Perry Meridian. She was joined by junior Brittany Aurelio, senior Jessie Staats and freshman Alex Green.
- Sophomore LaTeasha Hill proved Franklin Central with a pair of runner-up finishes in the discus and shot put competition.
- On top of helping FC's runner-up relay run, Aurelio also placed third in the 400-meter race, finishing just .04 of a second behind second-place Stephanie Lindsey of Perry Meridian. Aurelio and Lindsey ran in separate heats, with the top eight times contributing to the scoring.
- Senior Brittany Stafford placed in two events – fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus throw.
